Gender discrimination in physics and astronomy: Graduate student experiences of sexism and gender microaggressions
[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Gender in Physics.] Sexism occurs when men are believed to be superior to women, and is thought to be one of the reasons for women’s underrepresentation in physics and astronomy. The issue of sexism in physics and astronomy has not been thoroughly explored in the physics education literature and there is currently no clear language for discussing...
متن کاملThe Effect of Teaching History of Physics on Student-Teachers’ Understanding of the Process of Model Construction in Physics
To improve student teachers’ understanding of the process of model construction in Physics, it was hypothesized that teaching the history of Physics may be of help. To test this hypothesis, two groups of senior year female student-teachers in Teaching of Physics at one of the campuses of Farhangian University in Tehran were chosen: One group had passed a course on the history of Physics, while ...

We dedicate this issue of Communications in Mathematical Physics to our dear friend and colleague Roland Dobrushin, who died of cancer on November 13, 1995, at the age of 65. Dobrushin was not only a great, classic scientist, but he was also a man of integrity, courage, and good humor. These qualities stood out at a time and place where they were extremely scarce commodities. His joy of life wa...
متن کاملKadison–singer from Mathematical Physics: an Introduction
We give an informal overview of the Kadison–Singer extension problem with emphasis on its initial connections to Dirac’s formulation of quantum mechanics. Let H be an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space, and B (H) the algebra of all bounded operators in H. In the language of operator algebras, the Kadison–Singer problem asks whether or not for a given MASA D in B (H), every pure state ...
